Contemplative Spirituality
Occult means hidden knowledge.
The occult is no longer hidden in our society. It is out in the open in plain sight so occult is no longer an accurate word for it. It permeates the bookstores in self improvement books and in religious books often masquerading behind Christian sounding terms like contemplative prayer or centering prayer, breath prayer. "New Age" is also a term that I was told at a Mennonite Brethren Church in Winnipeg was something not to worry about. New age is something to take seriously as it is infiltrating mainstream churches through avenues like Purpose Driven theology.
Basically this type of prayer involves repeating a word or phrase over and over again in an attempt to empty your mind of all thoughts. This leaves the person doing this emptying in an altered state in which he or she is susceptible to demonic influence. We are not to empty our minds. We are to renew our minds.

I have read that people that do this type of prayer are sometimes contacted by beings of light which give them direction or guidance. Some call them spirit guides but in all honesty we are talking about devils or demons.

I find it incredible to believe that Mennonites are falling for this nonsense but somehow it has infiltrated the upper levels of the Mennonite institutions. There are several of their colleges that are teaching spiritual formation such as Providence College and Canadian Mennonite University et al. I read in their Mennonite Herald about the Emerging Church. It talked about this in a very good light. Several websites show the danger of this movement including:

The Emerging Church embraces eastern mysticism with it's contemplative prayer, yoga, etc. Many people are being deceived by many just as the Bible predicts will happen in the last days.

The New Age proponents believe that Jesus was in tune with the Christ inside of him that they believe is available to all people without necessarily believing the gospel. They believe anyone can become a Christ when they find the god or divine spark within them.
